While I wasn’t able to taste the 2012, the 2013 Gigondas (70/30 Grenache and Syrah) should be an outstanding wine. Medium-bodied, nicely textured and fresh, it has ample black raspberry, spice, wild herbs and spring flower-like aromas and flavors. It’s more classic in style than the modern-tinged Cuvee des Blaches cuvee, and should have a solid 10-12 years of overall longevity.
Located in Gigondas and created in 1988 by Philippe Cartoux, Domaine des Espieres produced its first vintage after three years, and sold the juice to negociants for another five, until it was good enough to bear the winery’s crest. Immediately, it found a market at such eateries as The Ritz and Le Crillon, and soon, it developed an international following.
