Sparrow Top 50 wines are selected on the basis of our wine philosophy and are reviewed and updated monthly by our tasting panel. In keeping with our mission statement, price is limited to less than $50 per bottle, with most under $20.

If we were forced to carry only 50 wines, these would be them!

Wine is one of the most complex consumer products there is. An endless variety of wines are made from seemingly every corner of the world, from thousands of grape varietals grown in an equally endless combination of soil and weather, mostly by passionate people with their own idea of what wine should be. And it all changes every year. Furthermore, wine is an organic product that is constantly evolving in the bottle. Finally, your perception of any given wine is affected by serving temperature, by what you’re having it with and even your mood! So how did we pick these 50 wines? As in any other such list, these wines simply reflect our opinion. But that opinion is anchored in a 25 year history of tasting thousands of wines each year and a commitment to bring our customers the world’s best and most interesting wines, consistent with our mission statement and wine philosophy, and backed up by our guarantee of satisfaction. And unlike other such lists published by many in the wine industry, you know where to find us!

Stacey Robertson
Wine Consultant
srobertson@sparrowine.com

Stacey has a wide range of international experiences in the wine industry. Beginning her career with a world-renowned wine writer in Canada, she learned about the art of tasting wines. She then applied her knowledge to a variety of tastings at Groovy Grapes and DiVino Wine Studio. With a new appreciation of wine regions of the world and what they have to offer, she decided to research this more in-depth.

She spent a year in Hungary exploring the diverse regions of this ancient wine producing country. Then with her desire to share her experiences about the unique tastes and culture of Hungary, she decided to compile a book of her time there.

Stacey is now completing her WSET Advanced Certificate at the International Wine Center in Manhattan.
Stacey is motivated to further her wine knowledge through education, tastings, and by traveling the fascinating wine regions of the world.

Peter Gatto
Wine Consultant
pgatto@sparrowine.com

Wine has been at the top of Peter's food pyramid for many years, from making wine with his family as a kid growing up in Brooklyn to traveling and tasting extensively through the wine regions of France, Italy and the U.S.

Peter believes that good wine together with good food is a large element in creating "the good life". He has read many books in the large wine library collected by his wife Pamela Burrell who also works at Sparrow and is more knowledgeable than he (although he takes credit for introducing her to wine many years ago).

When asked for help selecting a wine the first thing he will ask is what you're drinking it with. He believes that wine is not complicated and that there is only one thing you really need to know and that is whether you like a particular wine or not.
